The Tonle Sap River is the beating heart of Cambodia. Its forests, wetlands, and floodplains support millions of people—providing food, clean water, wildlife habitat, and cultural identity.
But today, communities around Tonle Sap face increasing threats:
Rapid deforestation
Illegal logging
Loss of fish and wildlife
Flooding from degraded riverbanks
Declining soil and water quality
Families losing the natural resources they depend on
Across the six provinces surrounding the Tonle Sap—Siem Reap, Battambang, Pursat, Kampong Thom, Kampong Chhnang, and Banteay Meanchey—local communities are struggling to protect what remains.
Many villages depend on forest products such as firewood, resin, medicinal plants, and materials for daily living. Without healthy forests, families fall deeper into poverty.
Yet these same communities have the power to protect and restore their forests—if they have the right support.
